Dec 21, 2008 1: Boot from Windows Install Media (Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 DVD) 2: At the Welcome to Setup screen choose the link for repair instead of clicking OK. 3: At the repair menu choose Command Prompt. Apr 17, 2018 To restore Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Vista, and Windows 7-based computers, the preferred method is a full system restore. Specifically, without using ASR, you can perform a Bare Metal Restore (BMR) to freshly formatted boot volumes and system volumes on the same server that the original backup was taken from.
I have a crashed (BSOD) Windows Server 2008 where i luckily have a backup from the night before the crash. This backup was made by using Windows Server Backup, doing a full system backup on a NAS. This creates a backup as 2 large .vhd files and some other small files in 192.168.56.14administratorWindowsBackupImagesServer1date.When I boot up the server I can do f8 and go to system repair and get the Windows System Recovery tool. Since the backup is not on the machine, but an external harddrive, it is expected the backup is not found. I've then tried to copy the backup to an external USB harddrive, attach it to the computer, with no luck, and also specify the network location in the recorvery tool. When using the network location I'm prompted for username and password, so I'm sure the NAS is found. I would expect the backup is being listed, but nothing is on the list in any of the cases. What am I missing or doing wrong?Really appreciate the help.- Soren

Having been through this very thing myself recently I can tell you to try 3 things:
- Make sure you have a DHCP server set up on the network. When trying to restore Windows from a backup located on a network drive, Windows (of course) needs TCP/IP connectivity in order to access the network and will need an ip address and subnet mask on the same network where the backup exists. In the repair/restore wizard you can bring up a command prompt (I don't remember the actual screen or option where this is available) and run ipconfig to confirm/verify that a valid TCP/IP configuration has been obtained.
- After verifying a valid TCPIP configuration, if prompted for credentials, use 'anonymous' for the user name (without the quotes) with a blank password. This assumes that the NAS is running some Unix/Linux variant as it's OS.
- When typing in the path to the backup make sure to type the full path to the WindowsImageBackup folder. Typing the path to the parent share is not enough as it appears that the backup routine will not traverse subfolders looking for a valid backup image.

You are right. System Restore is a built-in feature in Windows 7/8/10, which can help you create a restore point. It’s very useful. But it does not exist in Window Server 2008/2012/2016, including its R2 version. However, there’s a similar feature called System state backup that can do the same thing for you.

Method 1: Restore Windows Server with WBAdmin
WBAdmin (WBAdmin.exe) is a command-line utility built into Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012. It is used to perform backups and restores of operating systems, drive volumes, files, folders, and applications from a command-line interface.
The detailed steps:
Step 1. Type cmd in the search box, right click the command prompt and run as administrator
Step 2. Type a command based on the following syntax and press Enter to execute system state restore.
wbadmin start systemstaterecovery -version:versionIdentifier --backupTarget:Backup Destination location –machine:server name –quiet
Note:
- If you do not know the version and the backup target of your backup, you can type wbadmin get versions to gain this information.
- The backup destination location can be a drive letter, a volume GUID-based path, or a remote shared folder path. If you just have one backup, you can choose not to specify backup target.
- If there are multiple computers backed up to the same location, you can use “-machine” switch to specify the server to be recovered.
- The “-quiet” switch means to run the backup without prompt. Mp4 video software.
Taking Version identifier at 01:46 on 8/17/2017 and backup target on removable media as an example, you can type the following command in CMD
wbadmin start systemstaterecovery –version 08/17/2017-01:46

Step 5. Tick System State and click Next.
Step 6. Tick Original location and click Next.
Step 7. Click Recover to start the process. Just Wait until the process is 100% completed and click Finish to exit.
System state backup only contains boot files, active directory, cluster database, the registry and other system files, thus it cannot be counted as a full backup of your computer.
